light

Yes, for some of us the days are getting shorter the nights are getting longer.  Time to turn the lights on!  The science of proper lighting is complex, and technical.  I studied lighting in architecture school and can honestly say that even though I found the subject matter fascinating, I got bored beyond candelas during those long lectures.  (in a dimly lit lecture hall).  Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
Beautiful pendants like the one above are great for accent pieces and to bring character to a room.  They are not meant for task lighting or to light a big room.  Yes, of course they work better in groups sometimes you can play by just adding one to a corner just for fun and an interesting focal point.
In a dining room the placement of your chandelier or light fixture is truly what matters the most.  The bottom of the light fixture should hang at 30" from the table.  The overall size is somewhat important as well.  Drama is a great thing to have but you don't want your guests to pump their heads on your lamp every time they sit at your table.  Fixtures should be 6" from the outside of the table on each side.  So, the lamp should ideally be 12" smaller than your table.  Just be careful not to go too wide. Or too small. Be aware that a little lamp will never look good over a large table in a dining room.  Always measure your table before you go shopping for a dining room light.
When lighting a task area remember that light should also come from the sides. Limiting your task light source to an overhead light creates unwanted shadows.  Consult a lighting professional if your needs go beyond daily tasks.

candy corn decorations

Just to wrap things up with my candy corn obsession. Candy Corn is in my opinion the most resourceful candy and visually appealing little sweet. The monochromatic color scheme is appealing to the eye while its soft triangular shape is friendly and inviting. One piece is interesting to look at but like most simple objects its impact comes in numbers. Its never too late to add some fall color to your interior decor! Use it on pails, boxes, clear jars, mason jars, tall vases, in bowls, in flower arrangements... you get the idea.

It seems like the perfect day to finally go ahead and start this blog.  For years now friends and colleagues have suggested I start a blog.  I'm not a writer neither do I aspire to be one.  I do however have a genuine passion for art and design.  Blogging scares me.  The thought of having to write something smart witty and interesting is enough to keep me up at night.
The idea behind this blog is then to have fun sharing thoughts on design art and architecture.
Splatter with a daily dose of everyday living.
Candy corn is fun to look at, addictive (can't ever have just one) sweet and the best way to allow your taste buds to know fall is here.  Because even if you don't like to eat candy corn you can still decorate with it.
So here is to all things scary and sweet.
